Dear Parents:
So many exciting things have been happening at WE WIN Institute this summer. Your children have experienced so many wonderful and varied activities that have put them in touch with their culture and history.
Reading is the cornerstone of everything that we do. Kindergarten through fourth grade read a different book each week, which are written by Black authors & illustrators. Teachers extraordinaire: Rhonda Fields & Miata Foluke have been sharing their expertise with us. K-2, read, “Welcome to the Party,” by Gabrielle Union. Not only is she a great actress, but an awesome writer of children’s books. Mrs. Fields helped wanafunzi (children) connect words to the story and relate it to Black culture. Mrs. Foluke read, “Daddy Speaks Love,” by Leah Henderson, and illustrated by E.B. Lewis, who came to WE WIN Institute last summer. The children really wanted E.B. to stay. Mrs. Foluke had robust conversations about the importance of fathers, and about the men in the lives of the children and how they make such a positive difference. Wanafunzi created cards about the men in their lives.
“Welcome to the Party” “My Daddy Card” “Having men in my life is important”
“We Get it, Mrs. Fields” “Who is the favorite man in your life?” “I know the answer!”
The field trip Friday, July 26th is the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum in Chanhassen. Bring bug spray. We are going to have so much fun!
-Enjoy the rest of your week!
