We had such a great time last week at WE WIN Institute. Each day we are learning more about Black culture & history, and the many great things that Black people have done to make the world a better place to be. We are getting to know each other more and more, making friends, and having a great time reading, writing, and learning from brilliant community leaders.
Wanafunzi (children) have also been learning about dolls, with Robin Hickman-Winfield, who is the CEO of SoulTouch Productions. She has helped to make dolls “cool” for both boys and girls.
Our very first week, we had award winning illustrator, R. Gregory Christie, who has illustrated over 60 children’s book, come and work with all the children at WE WIN. He taught them how to make their own books. The youth got to know Mr. Christie and learned that they have the ability to create their own books. WE WIN also had a community event at UROC, where we served food, and Gregory Christie shared his story and offered to do what he can to help anyone who is interested in creating their own books. WE WIN gave away free autographed copies of his book to all that attended. All the wanafunzi (children) read one of Gregory Christie’s books, and created activities that they shared with the illustrator.
Swimming was so fun Jim Lupient pool, in northeast Minneapolis. It was a perfect day because the temperature was 90 degrees. Parents played in the water with the youth, and may have had more fun than the wanafunzi.
